Industry

In the Taiga Cordillera there is not much industry, due to the small amount of population. The main industries are mining and tourism.

The territory contains deposits of zinc, silver, and one of the world's most biggest tungsten deposits. There are also large deposits of copper, gold, nickle and platinum. There are occurences of asbestos, barite, coal, uranium, oil and gas.

The Yukon government supports the mining indusrty and it reflects in many programs that are designed to encourage mineral exploration.

The tourism industry had been important since the early years of the century. Visitors travelled by sternwheeler thorugh the Yukon systems until the Alaska Highway was built. Now most visitors drive from Southern Canada, through the Yukon to Alaska on the Alaska Highway.

Most people visit the Yukon to visit Canada's last frontier and the famous Klondyke Gold Rush. The tourism pull factors in the Yukon are hiking, canoeing, rafting, horseback ridding, fishing and hunting.
